IELTS Reading Matching Headings: How to Practice the Real Task Type

A practical guide to IELTS Reading matching headings questions, based on official sample task types and focused on paragraph purpose, not keyword guessing.

IELTS Reading Matching Headings: How to Practice the Real Task Type

IELTS Reading matching headings is a real official task type in IELTS sample materials. It asks you to match short headings to paragraphs or sections.

Use official IELTS pages for real practice:

  • IELTS Academic sample test questions
  • IELTS General Training sample test questions

This article does not copy protected IELTS passages or questions. It explains how to practice the skill.

The task is about paragraph purpose

Matching headings is not a vocabulary matching game.

A paragraph may mention three or four ideas, but the heading should capture the main job of the paragraph. Is it giving a cause, describing a problem, comparing two views, explaining a method, or giving an example?

That main job matters more than one repeated word.

Why keyword matching fails

Wrong headings often use words from the paragraph. That is the trap.

Before choosing, ask:

  • What is the paragraph mainly doing?
  • Is the heading too broad?
  • Is the heading only about one example?
  • Does another heading cover the paragraph more completely?
  • Did the paragraph change direction near the end?

If you cannot answer those questions, you are probably guessing.

Use a one-line margin note

After reading each paragraph, write a short note in your own words:

problem with old method

or:

why the discovery mattered

Do not copy phrases from the passage. Your note should capture meaning, not wording.

Then compare your note with the headings.

Review wrong answers properly

For each wrong answer, write two lines:

  1. Why the wrong heading looked attractive.
  2. Why the correct heading fits the whole paragraph better.

This turns a mistake into a reading habit.

Where Gotostudy fits

At gotostudy.net, you can turn your IELTS Reading paragraph notes and mistake log into a study guide. Ask an AI Tutor to quiz you on paragraph purpose, then save common traps as flashcards.

Use your own notes and official sample links. Do not paste protected full test sets into any tool.

Bottom line

IELTS matching headings gets easier when you stop chasing words and start naming paragraph purpose. Read, summarize the job of the paragraph, then choose.
